Question New 4:10 Gears

I need some input guys. This one is not for my truck, but a 2003 Mustang Mach 1. I just had a 4:10 ring and pinion installed. Regular driving and upshifts, no noise. When I start to slow down ( even after disengaging cruise control), I have a whine. It only does it when I depress the clutch and start to slow down, back into the gas it is fine. Mechanic said he shimmed the lash 4 times and the noise stays in the same place, just changes pitch. He also said this is from the machining of the gears and is common when you get into your 4's, no problem with a 3:73. Anyideas on his comments, he said he would swap out to a 3:73 and keep the 4:10 for his race car and we would call it even. The car sees no track time, so do I really need a 4:10 anyway? Also downloaded a Bama 91 octane race tune with the gear. Any help would be graet, Thanks!!!!

I' m not good with computers, so don't kill me if you get this multiple times. It is a Ford racing ring and pinion with a Ford racing Carbon disc rebuild kit for the Trac-Lock.

if they were brand new gears you have to break them in first but i had the same case with mine. i took the drive shaft off and opened everything back up and the pinion was loose i just tightened up the pinion bolt to where it wouldnt wiggle around and had a little drag. if you have everything open and rotate the pinion you should not be able to hear any chatter. it should be smooth either way

Trying a new set

Thanks for the heads up, I went ahead and got a set of Richmond gears, whine was getting loder between 1500-200 rpms, heard alot of bad things about FRRP racing gears made by Motive, will know by tommorrow once the rear cover comes off about adjustments. Also, the Richmond pinion comes stamped with shim requirements to take some guess work out of it.

I have a Richmond Gear video that shows how to change gears. The video may be 10 yrs old. I forget. However, one thing it says is that Richmond Gear gears are quiet up to 3.73 and they are noisy at 4.10 or higher. May not be the same now. Don't know. May want to ask the folks at Richmond Gear.

Thanks for the info, the Richmond vendor didn't say anything about a whine, pinion had engraved on top shims required to install, As long as the whine doesn't overpower the exhaust, I can live with that. Stay away from any Motive gear!!!!

Hey Punisher, I had the Motive 4:10 gear installed and cruising was fine, but anytime you get out of the gas, even coming off the cruise control, they would whine really bad. Found out FRRP gears come from Ford( Part numer ends in an "A"), or Motive (ends in an "M" listed also as FRRP). A lot of mechanics will not mess with the Motive gear due to the whine. One told me 2 lbs. of weight were shaved off of them, can't confirm taht. Anyway, will let you know how the Ricmond's sound.

The M models must be just plain jane blue box Motives. I've never heard many good things about them. I'm have a set of Motive Performance gears installed. Supposedly they're better than the blue box R&P's, but I'll find out after I break them in properly.

Let me know how they do, when I get the Richmond's put in It'll let you know. I do know without the whine, the car will pull and 1 gear disappears quick!!

I got a set of 4:10 Richmonds I believe(the ones with the nascars going across the box?) and never a problem with mine. I have had them in my cobra for about 12 years now.

Are you sure that the number is the shims required for the pinion? In the video I spoke of they say that you have to measure from the center of the carrier (special tool required) to the pinion and the number is the measurement off standard or something like that. I recommend you buy their video before installing. It's only about $15 from Summit Racing. May be money well spent. The housing could vary and the number stamped on the pinion is supposed to account for the housing difference as well as the gear differences (as I remember, It has been several years since I watched the video).

My son had 4.10 gears put in his 2004 GT Mustang in a speed shop (The Mustang Speed Shop?) in Long Island several years ago. He got one of the last sets of Motion Performance Ford gears that they had and the shop that installed them guaranteed that they would be quiet and they were. They also told him that Ford had started buying gears from Motive and they could not guarantee that the Motive gears would be quiet.

Thanks, good info. I just got the car back, switched to Richmond gears, they have the pinion depth engraved on the pinion, and the shop started from scratch. I have a slight whine accelerating in 2 and 3, but quiet cruising. He charged me $200.00, so nom complaints. I plan on buying an offroad x pipe and magnaflows, so I won't hear it. Thanks for your reply!!
