Riddle me this!

Can anyone give me a definitive answer as to what the clunking noise is when I take off from a dead stop. I've greased the slip yoke which gets rid of the noise but it comes back after 1000 miles or so.

I know a little something about drive trains and greasing the slip yoke doesn't make sense, yet it seems to work. BTW, I get the double clunk-clunk when taking off, nothing on decel or turning.

I'm all ears.

It's the slip yoke. Are you using teflon grease?

Yes.

What exactly does that mean? Is it binding, is it too loose of a fit? I've never had a vehicle with a drive shaft make this klunking sound.

The service manager at my dealer talked me out of having it greased. It was expensive and he said it really did no harm, just irritating. I was getting two solid bumps on take off. Then it went away on it's own. Sure glad I didn't spend the $180.

How many miles before it went away? I'm at 55k and have had the noise almost since new.

Mine started at around 95,000 and went away maybe 5000 miles later. Yours could be a little different. My dealer did visually check mine while I was getting the oil changed and said the u-joints were good and everything felt and looked ok.
