4WD Trick

Hey, believe it or not, I just recently read on here about a trick or something you do with the front axle to prevent it from engaging? This would allow you to use 4Lo without actually engaging the front axle into 4WD.

What's this trick...how do you do it??

I never changed the gears in my front axle, but have found occasion where 4Lo would be awesome maneuvering my trailer!!

Yeah I remember that thread. I believe they wired in a switch that controls a solenoid on the vacuum line that controls the front axle engagement. Flip the switch and shift into 4lo and it only engages the rear axle.

Even if you remove the front drive shaft it would still engage the front hubs because they are controlled by a vaccum actuator. Which when it is in 2wd it puts vaccum to the lines to suck the actuator back from the hub and when you engage the 4 wheel drive it removes the vaccum and the actuators slide into place around the hub.

At least that how it works for the 04 and up F150's I would imagine its the same for the body style before too but not positive on that.

OhioLariat installed a switch to his '99 which prevents the front axle from engaging when shifted into 4WD (allowing 2WD Low). I don't think he posted exactly how he did it though ...

The pre-04 system is totally different. The 04+ uses IWE's (hubs) and the old ones use a lock in the differential.
