take off thud ?
take off thud ?
i have a 04 F 150 4x4 and from a dead stop right when you first take off it seem like i just pops into gear but its not tranny related it seems like its in the rear end just wondering if any of yall have experinced this problem and know how to fix it
I found this a few weeks ago... I do not know if it is the source of your problem, but ford has a TSB out so it must be a very common problem. My truck does this, and I need to do this to see if it fixes the problem.
FORD:
1997-2004 F-150
1997-2006 E-Series
1999-2006 F-Super Duty
This article supersedes TSB 04-26-6 to update the affected model years.
ISSUE:
Some 1997-2006 E-Series, 1999-2006 F-Super Duty, 1997-2003 F-150 and 2004 F-150 Heritage 4x2 vehicles may exhibit a driveline clunk or bump that occurs as the vehicle starts to move forward, following a stop. This condition may be caused by the slip yoke not sliding smoothly on the output shaft splines.
ACTION:
Lubricate the slip yoke with Motorcraft PTFE Lubricant. Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Verify the condition.
2. Remove the driveshaft per Workshop Manual Section 205-01. Be sure to index-mark the driveshaft during removal to maintain alignment during reinstallation.
3. Lubricate the slip yoke with 7-13 grams (0.25-0.46 oz.) of Motorcraft PTFE Lubricant.
4. Re-index and reinstall the driveshaft per Workshop Manual.
5. Verify the repair.

Something else to check (for 4X4 owners anyway). I had an older Dodge truck prior to owning my 07 F150 and it had the same symptoms..
What it ended up being was a broken retainer clip inside the transfer case that allowed that shaft to walk back and forth a little bit during takeoff.
Not sure if Ford uses that same technology in their T-cases, but, its a possibility if you have ruled out Trans/U-joint as the root cause.

I have an 05 two wheel drive and mine has just started this. When I take off, there is a thud and then a second lighter thud. If I am on an incline, both thuds are a little harder.

Another story is, it is doing it again at 40000 miles now. I will be back in to get it completed again.
Hope this helped,

To the OP and Bluejay, I have an 05 two wheel drive as well and had this problem. Took it to the dealership and they covered it under a TSB *not sure which one*. It was the slip yoke needing to be lubed. I had this done at 15000 miles. They told me that Ford switched the grease that they normally used and that this grease would wear away faster needing the service. They said that the TSB had them use a better longer lasting grease. When I picked the truck up, it was a day and night difference, the clunk completely went away.
