What $ and time for changing a ls clutch pack?

From my research it is looking more and more like I will have to change the clutch packs in my 06 LS screw 4x4. I had the fluids changed on Friday and modifier was added. The rear still vibrates a bit from a stop into a turn and really bad from reverse, stop, then forward into a turn. Especially when the drive line is warmer right up.

I did a search on this but the posts were 3 years or older.
How much time does changing the packs out take and are the "new" ones from Ford any better. I only have 64k miles on this thing. Is this something a good mechanic can do or should a Ford guy with experience in these things be the best??

Thanks!!

My 2000 9.75 did the same and I added a second bottle of friction modifier and it fixed it. I used Motorcraft synthetic lubricant and Motorcraft friction modifier.

You don't need new clutches. The clutches are not releasing when they should. If they were worn out, they wouldn't make any noise, they just would not grip and make both wheels pull together.

There was a TSB on this subject for the 2000 models. The Ford recommended fix included new clutches and 0.010" less shims preloading the clutch pack. The parts guy told me that everybody just puts an extra bottle of modifier in it instead. My truck I did that to belongs to someone else now and has 150k miles on it and no problems from the TL.

Thanks for the reply. I just added a second bottle as per talking to a few Ford service managers in town today. I will giver a few more days.
They don't make any noise at all. They just vibrate or shudder the back end going from a stop into a turn. Worse if I just say backed out of a parking stall . I can do figure 8's at say 10 miles an hr all day with no shudder.

I did find my answer though 3 hrs labour and 295 bucks for the kit from Ford.

Yeah, actually mine didn't make much noise either. I surely could feel the chattering when cornering though. And I did change the fluid at the same time too.

If you are an amateur mechanic you can change the pack your self. You don't have to disturb the gear setting to do it. I bet an experienced mechanic could do it in a hour. But these days, they charge based on some inflated book time unless they are doing warranty work. Ford won't pay the inflated work hours they charge us!!!

I added a second bottle of modifier yesterday and it is getting better. One really has to call around as I got prices from 1100 bucks to 600 bucks. All from Ford dealers. Same as when I got my plugs changed. I had prices ranging from 400 to 900. A second key cut for my truck, prices ranged from 120 to 210 bucks!!! .. I have a buddy doing all my truck work as I am renovating his house so I just keep track of the hrs and take a an average from all my quotes from Ford. You think that a key cut or a clutch kit rebuild would be the same price at all Ford dealers but nope. So call around!!

For that kind of money you could both regear it and get an aftermarket limited slip or locker.

Roadie,
What weight oil did you use? Did you stick with 75W90 or go with 75W140 per the SB? Also how much friction modifier did you use? The SB calls for 4oz's, did you end up using 8oz's? Sounds like you had good luck with your chatter issue and hopefully I will have the same luck. Thanks for your comments. Have a great day!

After the second bottle of modifier and about 700 miles the vibration is considerably less. Still there a bit but not worth changing the packs yet. I was suprised nobody from any dealership could tell me how long it takes to work in the modifier but in my case 700 miles!!! After plugs, front brakes and alternator, i will wait to dump more money into this truck!!!

What was the name of the gear oil and the friction modifier that you put in your truck? My truck is acting up real bad and the stealership wants 1300 to replace clutch packs. I can get a tru-trac installed for 900.00 at the offroad shop, but I want to see if the fluid change will do the job.

You can use ANY brand 75w140 full synthetic gear lube, and the best modifier to use is from the Ford dealer, just ask the parts department for limited slip modifier.
