Loud noise from Left wheel when 4x4 is engaged. '01 F150

I'm having a problem that I can't find listed in the forums. I was hoping folks here could help figure out what is going on.

The last couple times I engaged 4 wheel drive in my truck, it made a strange sound. The first time it almost sounded like a the brake wear indicator. The last time, I just put the truck in 4x4 to move it back into the garage, and the sound was VERY loud. It's a screeching/squealing sound. The noise comes from the left front wheel, and sounds like metal-on-metal. It goes away as soon as I disengage the 4 wheel drive. The truck seems to go into and out of 4 wheel drive without any other problems.

The truck is a 2001 scab, 8-foot bed, 4x4 5.4 auto, with the offroad package. It is completely stock, has 120k miles, and has the manual 4x4 lever on the floor. Any help/suggestions is greatly appreciated!

As the axle is always turning on the 97-03s, I doubt it would be a bearing. It might be a CV joint that once you put a load on it that you get the noise. Check the CV joint boots for rips, etc. Also check the front u-joints. The sound may sound like it is from the one side, but may be from anywhere. U-joints would only turn in 4x4.
