Started to troubleshoot this morning and was checking points at the shift motor and decided to give if a few taps from my trusty Mag light and "voila". The contacts must have been hung up. Thanks for all the feedback.

Hello Everyone,I'm replacing the trans motor. This is What we believe the problem may be.However there are two fuses for the 4x4 in the dashboard. Before tearing the dash apart, this what i'm doing .This is coming from my mechanic.I also was able to find some codes for the truck.Hopefully this works. Will let you know tonight.Awaiting the blizzard here in NY.

I changed the transfer case motor, still no 4x4. I'm now looking for a new gem. This is really frustrating!

4x4

HEY HAWK,
Checked the shift motor, and replaced it.still having problems. The mechanic thinks it'"s the gem .There is also a relay underneath the top dash panel on the passagers' side. You can pull this up by hand. It's a round ,or oval plastic plate. This was not my problem, but it may work for you.I'm replacing the gem.IT's about $75.00,used through a salvage yard. Will let you know if it works.

Jerry, put a volt meter on the power wires of the motor wires, switch to 4X4 and see if you see any voltage. if you get any voltage than you got a bad motor. if no voltage it might be gem if the relay is ok. On my truck i walked outside this morning and the park lights were on and the headlight switch was off. i pulled fuse #1 from the fuse box under the hood to get lights to go out. I think my gem is shot. Have your mechanic check gem connection for corrosion. after you put the motor in did you disconnect battery fo 20 minutes. if not, do it to reset gem. good luck. let me know

Well, I got my truck fixed. It was the gem. I would have never known for sure what was wrong if I hadnt taken it to a dealer and put on the computer. New gem= $322. Program the gem$70. Computer check$70. Labor $131. Total $593. got operational 4x4 with 2 ft of snow on the ground = PRICELESS. HAHA

Might of saved you $593

I am a bit late in responding but this is what happened to me with my F150 4X4 2000 Truck when it wouldn't shift into 4X4:

I was going up a hill and sliding back on the ice. I had shifted into 4X4 before heading out and realized that it had not engaged. I turned off the sirius radio. Tried it again. Didn't work. Shut off the engine. Then restarted it and only then was the truck now in 4X4.

I really think that the computerized electronics of a vehicle gets interference of radio and satellite signals.
