Question Transfer case shift motor test?

I think the transfer case motor went out. I bought a digital multimeter to test it but i thinking it was a dumb idea cus I have no idea how to use it. Anybody know how to do this? Are there relays or fuses I should check as well?

I get nothing when I try to switch it into four wheel. No light, no click, front drive shaft doesnt lock in nothing. So youd say its definatly the motor then?

I am also having transfer case problems with my 1997 F150 with automatic trans and electrical 4wd control. It was locked in 4WH and would not come out of 4WH. No matter which position I moved the switch into it stayed locked into 4WH. I have removed the transfer case electrical motor and physically moved the transfer case into 2H and the truck is working fine now. But the dash light still show it to be in 4WH. Before I spend the bucks on a new transfer case electical motor is there anything to troubleshoot and make sure it is the motor and not a switch or other electrical issue?
Thanks.

whoops

I took the motor off and switched it into 4h but I couldn’t put the motor back on because of the triangular shape of the **** that comes out of the t case only allows it to go on one way. I couldn’t force turn the motor to fit it on so I just left it off. Nobody try this. It turns out the motor is what holds the t case in 4h. It kicked out and the truck shook violently before coasting to a stop. When I hit the gas it acted like it was in neutral. I had put it back in 2h and put the motor back on. I bought a new t case from a buddy who’s parting out his ford. It wasn’t that bad of an idea if I would have secured it somehow. The thought did cross my mind but I didn’t think it would really happen.

Have someone activate a shift and look for a brief (one second) increase in voltage, and listen for the relay to click ON, then OFF..
