Noise
I know this will sound crazy, but could this whoosing sound be the power steering fluid rushing through the lines. I have read on these boards before about the power steering fluid making alot of noise through the pump.
what do you think?

I just went back and did a search on the power steering. If you go back to a thread started by Basscat on 10/11/99 and scroll down to Marv1's reply he explains about the fluid running through the resevoir which is mounted on the firewall right in front of the driver. Check it out!
Hope this helps.

I too am embarrased by the noise, and it is not related to the power steering fluid. It is kind of a combination clicking and rubbing sound.I figure I will keep driving it until the noise is really loud and then take it in to the dealer, because if I take it in now the same thing will probably happen to me, they will say they can't hear it.Maybe someone can figure this out. Help!!

I read all the posts and the last one mentioned a "clicking" noise so I'll throw this out and see if it helps anybody. My [traded in 2 weeks ago] 97 F-150 S/C 4x4 used to make this awful clickity, tinkling kinda noise at low speeds and over small bumps. It was particularly noticeable every day as I went up the ramp in my works parking structure. I spent hours under the truck looking for loose parts. It kinda sounded like a heat shield rattling or some other nonsense. It eluded me to no end. Dealer had no luck either (2 trips in for it). Then another trip to the dealer for another noise... Rear springs groaning (again) at slow speeds when stopping and backing up. I noticed the rear springs out of alignment (again; Had them "aligned" twice before by dealer...Even after the recall clamps were put in). Told the dealer they were noisy and out of alignment again and to please fix them right this time. I get the truck back the next day after my laundry list of minor complaints were fixed (clickety noise not one of them, I had given up). I see on the invoice a line indicating they R&R'd the rear spring assembly's to align and lube... It then shows rear leaf hanger bushings replaced... I look under the truck and see only one (rear passenger side leafs rear bushing) that looked brand new; clean bolts showing it had been taken out. Other side still looked OEM. I asked about this and they said when they took the leafs apart they found the passenger side leafs rear bushing completely destroyed so they replaced it. What do you know... the next day in the parking structure no noise... Completely gone... No more clickety clack rattling! It cured it completely and it never came back. That stupid bushing had been gone and over bumps and going up hill at slow speeds that leaf had been banging around on the hanger bolt without benefit of rubber bushing. Hope this can help someone avoid the grief that stupid thing caused me... It's the little things that getcha.

Nice post!
It would be great if this bbs had a section where symptoms and cures were listed.
Not long ago, I had the opportunity to visit the sevice call-center of a major vehicle manufacturer. It turns out that they capture every symptom and each 'fix' -- wherein the service rep then has a list of symptoms, and then a list of fixes -- in order by % of likelihood of fixing the problem.
For example, if the symptom is "rough idle with 2 adjacent cyllinders wet with water" -- it might show a 75% chance of fixing the problem (based upon former experience) by changing the head gasket -- whereas if the service rep is really under pressure to fix it on the first try, he may see a 99% chance of fix for: "replace engine".
I've offered to discuss something like this with the sysop -- but have not been able to reach a dialog.

Thanks for the reply but this is not a rattle. This noise is related to the speed of the vehicle. I start hearing it around 15 mph and as the truck slows down so does the noise. It seems that it is directly related to some part of the drivetrain.

Hopefully this will help a little. I too have the noise. The latest installment finds me taking my truck back into the dealer last Wednesday because the output on the transfer case was leaking. This is the second time. I relayed this to the dealer because the first repair was done at another dealer. I havent received the truck back yet, but apparently the noise was coming from the transfer case. i believe he said it was the orbital. They had to order parts to do the repair. I will let you know if this solves the problem. And give you an exact accounting from the paperwork when I get it back. They seem to think this is the smoking gun.
Hi, sorry it's been awhile since I have gotten back. I replaced the Goodyears and bought the Michelin XC LT 4 tires. The sound went away!! I really like these tires. They are not the mud and snow tires, but living in Dallas Texas, I don't drive in too much of that anyway. The tires are smoother, more quiet, and provide better traction when it rains(been a long time
. Good luck on your tires, I'm glad the noise went away on my truck and hope yours does too! keith
