I'm checking into a custom CV set up like the 35 spline on the
Mustang. Many companies will make a custom setup.
There are stronger CV joints that can be mated to the half shafts.
When I find out something I will let you know.

Typically custom built CV shafts are expensive. Thats why nobody has come out with them. Most people wouldn't fork over the cash to buy them.

I'd love to get a set similar in design to a baja race truck, but you're looking at $1000 per shaft. But you'd be guaranteed you'd never have to buy another set again for the life of the truck.

powerlifter405,

See if you can get something for a 97-98 Lincoln MARK VII. The PN for the Lincoln and the front end of the F-150 are the same. FYI you will bust a CV joint long before you break the Diff. In the rear end the 8.8 should not be on a 4x4. Why does Ford use the 9.75 when you order a 5.4?

I'm not having a tough time with the shafts. But i am wondering
if the 31 spline diff innards would fit into the 8.8 IFS of an F-150?
Also, what about the hubs? Are there 31spline hubs that would work?
Anyone!

Can't swap the gears. The front is a reverse cut gear set and the rear is a standard cut. So no you can't swap them out.

Also there are no huybs on 97+ F150s. Theres a center axle disconnect just off the drivers side of the pig. The thing you have to find will be 31 spline axle shafts for an 8.8 IFS and good luck. They'd have to be custom made. In order to get 31 spline shafts you'd have to find a blank set of 8.8IFS shafts and have them splined to what you need. You need to find these shafts since you need the mounting flange on the end for the CVs to mount on.

There are hubs on the 150 it's just they are not the disconnecting
type. (More of a bearing and hub assembly)
What ever the axle shafts fit into on the front wheel
would also have to be 31 spline

No they're not any hubs on 97+ F150s. Its just a bearing assembly is all thats on the outters. No hub mechanism. All it is is a sealec bearing assembly with a splined center, and in some cases ABS sensors. I don't know how you could consider that a hub assembly.

Not to argue, but the term "hub" referres to the center of a wheel
or the center terminus of spokes.
Call it what you will

On a 4x4 truck you would refer to hubs as in lockout hubs (either manual or automatic) which the 97+ F150 doesn't have.

But I do see what you mean, so yes you are right. Same word, different meanings.

Isn't there a magazine about ford pic-ups? Or can you recommend
any good books or manuals?
Thanks

If you want repairs look for Haynes or Chiltons books. They're pretty helpful, although some things are hard to find in them. It would be nice if they had a few more specs in there. The chiltons includes all the wiring and vacuum diagrams which is nice.
