LS swap in 3.08 open diff?
this may be a dumb question, but after a lot of reading, i'm still unclear...
i have an 03 4.6 2wd ext cab - 3.08 open diff. eventually, i'd like to re-gear to 4.10 or maybe 4.30 (in conjunction w/ tire swap, lift, etc), but first i want to know if it's possible to put in a detroit true-trac LS in the same gearing, and the later re-gear.
hate the open diff when the roads are wet/slushy...

Yes. If you have a Ford axle, they have no carrier breaks. The ring gear is made thicker or thinner to accommodate the larger or smaller pinion gear (the taller ratio has a large pinion, whereas the lower gear, 4.56:1, has a smaller one). Dana axles change the ring gear mounting flange position on the carrier to move the same thickness of ring gear where in needs to be to mesh with the pinion.
you can put your current gears on a tru-trac now and then upgrade just the gears later using the same carrier.

It's a complicated and expensive job ($500?). I'm sure you don't want to pay for setting up the gears twice. Wait until you get the tru-trac and gears and do it at the same time.
An alternative may be the Richmond gear powertrax that can be installed without disturbing the existing gears/gear settings. Go to their web site and take a look at their videos to see how it works. You could install this yourself if you are a half way shade tree mechanic.

Thanks, guys - exactly what i was looking to find out, and yeah, definitely would be stupid to pay for that work twice. Haven't read about that, Roadie - will check into it - thanks.

Two things to keep in mind. 1) Make sure they swap the ABS exciter gear from the old diff to the new one. 2) DON'T use synthetic diff fluid with the Tru-trac, use conventional 75w90 or 80w90.
I would not recommend a locker or limited slip in the front of any truck that's driven on dry pavement unless you use one of those manually operated electric lockers. Just put something in the rear.
