Tech help. 9"upgrade in 2004 screw

I'm in the process of installing a 9" rear end in my 2004 screw. Before I took it to the shop i unplugged the sensor on top of the stock rear end and drove it around. It did not seem to affect the truck at all untill I ran WOT and shifing into 2nd gear it stalled and engine light turned on. This is not a speed sensor, speedo still worked. What is this sensor and how can I bypass it when I get the truck back with the 9" rear? Truck is a 5.4. The 9" was installed for an offroad app.

Read out the OBD2 codes, and that should give you a pretty good clue.

That should be an ABS sensor I think for the rear end. Why a 9" rear end? I thought the 5.4 always got the 9.75 rear.

What you need to retain the ABS sensor is a tone ring. I've seen guys build their own that mount to the x-fer case output or you could run something like in the link below.

The 9" since since it's been used in nearly every motor sport imaginable has a metric **** ton of aftermarket upgrades. You can build the hell out of them. The 9.75...not so much. Best part is if you want to regrear, just buy an already setup 3rd member. I got mine with 5.14 gears and a full spool for 200 bucks, MUCH less than a shop setup would cost for gears alone.

This guy used an 8.8 tone ring

My ABS is already disabled. Check my pics before I get harassed for not having ABS. I have a gyphon so I would love to give my DTC but my truck is in the shop.

why do you want a 9"? the only advatage is fast ratio swaps if you have a few sections with different ratios built. But you have a 4x4 so thats not possible anyways

Why comment if you don't have the answer? It's two wheel drive and a 9" is a lot stronger plus mine is wider.

my bad thought i read 4x4 in there somewhere. Still there is plenty of people runnin over 400rwhp with no problems on a 9.75. The rear sensor is used for ABS and also for calculating load. The truck will not run properly without it and cruise controll will not work either.

Right on thanks a lot. Now I need to find a way to bypass it but I will probably end up having a toner ring made and relocated. My rearend is 6" wider than stock. It has full floating Hubs 35 spline axles and a rear truss. I'm not sure what size gears the 9.75 will allow but I have 5.14, recomended for a 37" tire. All in all it's 100 times better for desert use. It was not worth extending the stock rear end and adding custom hubs to truss over the 9.75 rear cover. Thanks a lot for the info.

Just an FYI for everybody, the 5.13 ratio is available for the 9.75 rear... Just not available for the 8.8 IFS front for the 4WD F-150's (It won't fit in the small pumpkin.)

However, I do agree 100% with everything Code said.

Here is a link to a very good 9.75 buildup:

No, it will not strain the tranny...just the performance will suck butt. The tranny doens't know any difference, besides the torque converter locking and unlocking...BTW, is what you're experiencing. It's most likely not dropping in and out of OD.
