Hi i have a 1997 f-150 4x4 with the 4.6 I got it with a bad rear end i fixed it now my transfercase makes a clunk?? when i got it the guy said the 4x4 would not disengage so he took the driveshaft out. so my truck doesnt have a front driveshaft in it and the 4x4 light will not come on? does the front shaft need to be in for the light to come on? im lost with it does anyone have any ideas??????

To my knowledge the switch that turns on the light is on the transfer case, if the case has been in 4wheeldrive for a long time it is possible that the light is burned out.

could be the sensor on the Tcase, if the ball in the sensor gets worn it begins to stick or not release/engage properly. If it malfunctions your diff wont unlock or lock as it doesnt send the signal to the selonoids for the front diff. It is just a thread in sensor with a ball bearing in the tip, I recently did it to mine cheap and easy to try.
