Diferential cover question.

I am in the process of changing the rear end fluid in my 2001 Expd. It has the 9 3/4 rear. Can any one tell me what the torque is supposed to be on the diff cover bolts?

if you dont get a response you could probly try messaging Wandell. You've probably already done this, but it may be in the owner's manual... Im guessing its not, and its probably only in the Hanes Expedition manual or something similar.

It's like 19 ft lbs or something.

Not very tight I know that. If you go too tight you will end up pushing all the rtv out and it won't seal.

Lots of guy's just go barely over finger tight then let it set overnight or something then tighten them a little more after the RTV dries some.

If you have the money, get a Mag Hy-Tech cover and replace your old one.

They have a drain plug, dipstick, and O-ring so you don't have to jack with the RTV.

Google Mag Hy-Tech if your interested.

I ended up snugging it down let it sit for a couple of hours then torqued to 20 lbft. I filled it up and will let it sit all night to make sure it is setup 100 percent. The Mag Hy-Tech, nor the PML will fit the Expedition, due to the "panhard" beam that passes just behind the differential. I had a heck of a time just getting the stock cover back on. I had originally planedd on a Mag Hy-Tech, but as soon as I crawled under knew thee was no way, it would fit. I measured for the PML, and it wouldn't clear either.

The Ford workshop manual states 33 lb/ft. Hope this isn't too late for you.

Thanks for the info. I will go out this AM and retorque to 33. It isn't showing any signs of leaking yet.

I did mine this morning and according to Jackson Powertrain where I got my white bottle of friction modifier ( Green Stinky stuff ) they said torque 29 to 33 ftlbs. I do have a drain plug on mine but they said to remove the cover anyway and clean everything out good so thats what I did .. I bought a gasket as well.. The friction modifier was 10.00 and the gasket was 12.50 .. I used 75/140 RP to fill it but I added the friction modifier stuff first .. Now I just have to go drive it around.. The guys at Jackson Powertrain said if the rear end is already whining it could cost upwards of 900.00 to repair it.. I will sale the truck before I pay 900.00 for a rear end .... (((OK MAYBE NOT )))
