OK, I just went through this in my 97 F150 4 x 4 .There is a bolt that runs through the mounting plate on the tranny case and that seizes up.I went to the Ford Dealer and order a new one.It was $105 dollars plus tax.The 2 bolts that mount to the the shifting linkage to the tranny are 13/16 (had to use a box wrench again on these, as linkage was fronzen and could not get a socket up there). Then the one bolt on the 4 wheel driver shifter that goes through the floor board is a 1/2 bolt.Pull the know and the boot off and you can reach it from the top, real easy if you have a ratchet box wrench. Then where it attaches to the transfer case,I just took a big flat screw driver and pryed it out. and then wiggled it down between the front drive shaft. Then installed the new one in reverse order. Also before you install the new one compare the mounting bracket, as the new one had the mounting holes in the wrong spot.So I had to break out the cordless impact gun to get that seized bolt out, and just used the old plate with the new linkage. If all goes well it is a 30 minute job, and that was doing it on the ground. If I had a lift, probley 15 minutes. Also get a new bolt for the floot shifter, I was installing the bolt in my new linkage and i broke, so I had to take it back off and drill and tap it.You may beable just to take the old linkage off and free it up, but I did not want to take a chance having it seize up during the winter.
