I am curious as to what your thoughts are as to why Ford added 4.10 gears to a 4x4 truck with 35's when most everyone on this thread recommends 4.56 gears for that type of configuration?

Thoughts?

 

Probably fuel mileage reasons. I mean I'm new to trucks, but not to modded v8's (stangs), and 4.56's would kill mpg's, one would think.

 

Absolutely... Gas Mileage. No other reason. As far as "everyone" on here saying 4.56's for 35's, well the vast majority are telling you that for towing or hauling rather than all around perfomance and fuel efficiency

 

My truck is my DD, so 4.56's, I think, would be a poor choice or gear for me (personally). When I get wheels/tires I do not want to have to change all kinds of other parts just to compinsate for the rolling stock.

 

I'm sure fuel mileage was a big concern. You also need to remember the 6 speed trans has a much lower first gear than the old 4 speed so in theory, you don't need as much gear in the diffs to have the same result.

 

It's EPA gas mileage ratings, not real world.

 

The first gear in the 6 speed is almost like a granny gear on my 09 fX4 w/ 20" wheel package and 3.73 gears. I'd agree that the low first gear would be sufficient to use 4.10 gears with 35" tires.

 

I have 4.10 gears w/ 35" tires. No complaints. It just depends on what you're doing. No doubt about it; 4.56 will give you more power. But do you need them? It's like night vision on your assault rifle or a silencer on your handgun. You can get it. But are you going to use it?

 

rated fuel mileage is the biggest concern that comes to my mind. the lower first gear in the 6 speed transmission also permits the user of a numerically "higher" ratio than 4.56. remember, the 4.30 ratio is not manufactured for the 8.8 IFS front axle, so that is not an option, either.
