Question Rear speed sensor circuit and coherency fault

Hey guys/gals,

I checked and cleared codes on my truck today using a Snap-On scan tool.

I got these codes:

C1230 - Rear speed sensor circuit fault.
C1229 - Rear speed sensor coherency fault.

I cleared the codes, and the ABS light went out for a couple of seconds, but returned almost immediately, before even putting the truck in gear.

Is my rear speed sensor bad? Does anyone have a test procedure to test the sensor? A coherency fault... Could that be a difference in readings between the front and rear sensors?

Thanks guys,

Derek.

Needs sensor on the rear axle housing. 150% positive. Easy to fix, and not so expensive either.

Called Ford, they are asking $65! Everyone here is telling me that they go for $20-$25 through ford. I want the Motorcraft replacement, no Chinese junk for me.

I’m getting these codes. I bought an auto zone center sensor . I returned it and got another one and I’m still getting these codes.

(I know it’s an older thread)

Please identify what you are working on - year and rear or 4 wheel ABS at the minimum.

it’s a 4wd 6 cylinder 2000 F150
that code is likely for rear. I have replaced rear center abs sensor twice from auto zone.

You sure you are changing the correct sensor? I know they are not cheap, but I only trust Motorcraft sensors. Do you have rear only ABS or 4 wheel ABS?

Rock Auto does not carry the Motorcraft sensor, but this one is from a decent manufacturer:

The C1230 indicates you have an electrical circuit fault related to the rear ABS sensor. It does NOT specifically mean the sensor is faulty, you have to perform proper troubleshooting to determine what is actually faulty.

A "good" abs sensor typically will read between 1000 and 2500 ohms resistance. They usually open when they fail but do occasionally short internally. If the sensor tests okay with a meter, you have either a wiring fault or a problem internal to the ABS module.
