4:56 Gear Swap Shopping List & Questions
4:56 Gear Swap Shopping List & Questions
After a butt-load of searching, I've got an idea of what I want to go with in terms of brand and ratio, a 4:56 setup to replace my stocks cuz this thing is a DOG with my new tires. But I still have some specific questions to make sure I don't forget something or get more then I need and get effed over by installer/part seller. I hope you guys can help me out.
My current setup..
-2006 FX4 SuperCrew Flareside 6.5' bed 5.4L V8 (It's a heavy bitch)
-22k Miles (These were mostly Highway, 4x4 may never of been used)
-3.73 Limited Slip Rear (Stock)
-90% Of driving is now City
My shopping list so far..
-Yukon 8.8"(R) IFS 4:56 Gear Set $249.88
-Yukon 9.75" 4:56 Gear Set $302.29
-8.8" Minor Install Kit $28.50
-9.75" Minor Install Kit $104.50
-3 Quarts of RP 75w140 Gear Oil $53.99
- Motorcraft Friction Modifier $4
I'm planning on ordering those items and taking it to a local shop to have them swap it out. Here are my main concerns...
1) I was told since my truck only has 22k miles, that I do not need to spend the extra coin on master install kits, especially if I didn't plan on getting one with a upper brand of bearings. Does this sound right?
2) I remember seeing something about if I went bigger then 4:10, that I would have to buy extra parts, such as a carrier??
3) Do I need to worry about compatibility with my current stock LSD and a set of 4:56 gears? Or is the stock LSD pretty much unaffected?
4) Am I forgetting anything?!

I just changed my 2002 7700 10.25 rear from 3.73 lsd to 4.56 in March .
My truck has just over 66,000 miles.
My gear installer said bearing change was up to me. I did it just to be safe.
My carrier worked fine for me. No new carrier needed.
My stock LSD works fine.
My truck is about 90% city driving also.
I did just take it on a 450 mile round tow trip and it worked great.
Total of truck and the Navigator we towed was 13,340 lbs.
I'm glad I did the gear swap.
I would do it all over again,
Next year I add the lightning motor.

awesome thanks, I am definitely making this my next mod. This crew cab just feels so heavy!
and I can't wait to see the Lightning motor build
maybe you should just steal the navigator's motor and throw a big *** turbo on it!
