Upgrading from a 2000 ford ranger kingcab stepside 4x4 here soon (as soon as i sell it, any takers? lol) to a 04-07 kingcab/screw f-150 fx4/lariat and ive found a 2004 screw fx4 with about 8-9in of lift and its runnin 37in tires and 20in rims and a 2005 XLT runnin 37's and 20's also...whether i get either one of these i dunno but i still wanna go with the look of runnin 37in tires and 20s. I occasionally tow a lawncare trailer (have been with my ranger on 33's with tbar crank and stck gears...OUCH) ,20ft bass boat and i hunt my *** off during deer season so the truck will be in and out the woods but i dont tend to beat on trucks hardly in the woods, just the occasional crusie through a patch of mud and my question is , with the occasional towing, hunting and highway driving i do to get back and forth to college should i re-gear to 4.56 or 4.88 runnin 37's and 20's? And is there anyone runnin this setup that can comment on the way it drives and the mpg there gettin? I dont get but 12 with my lil dink ole ranger so "im no stranger to the rain", lol
With 37s I'd go 4.88s no doubt. Once you get into the really big tires like that, not only do you have to consider the extra diameter, but you have to factor in all the extra weight and rolling resistance they add over a shorter and narrower tire.
I would do 4.88s if you are running 37s. I have heard guys say how they wished they'd of gone ahead with 4.88s even when they had 35s, cause later they upgraded and had that "laggging" feeling.... Not saying if you get 35s you should have 4.88s, just if you plan to get 37s at some point.... Try searching for TexasAviator and FX4forlife. They have 10" and 12" suspension lifts, but they could probably answer your question backed with more experience than what I have.
