Towing F-150 4-WD with manual transfer
I have a friend with a F-150 4-WD with manual transfer. He wants to tow behind his motor home. The manual says something about disconnecting a vacuum line as well as putting the gear in reverse (I think). Neither he nore the local dealer can figure out what vacuum line and where it is. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Thanks
I believe the vacuum line is on the front axle housing. It's used to lock the axles together.

Jess,
The T-case must be put into Neutral to disconect the Auto transmission from the drive line. When you engage Neutral in the T-case you also engage the center axle disconnect collar in the front differential. Disconnecting the light blue vacuum hose on the 4WD vacuum hub solenoid, and this will inhibit the front axle from locking up. Note you cannot tow an Automatic with the electric shift on the fly.

JMC, I've never checked.... if he waits until the truck is hooked up to the tow vehicle, turns the key off (but in the unlock position for the steering, of course) and THEN pulls the lever, will the solenoids still switch and try to engage it? I would think that, as long as the key is off at the time, the center-axle disconnect would stay disconnected, no? Even if it did connect, with no link between the transfer case and the trans, the only difference would be that the front end would be engaged, right? Are the front and rear driveshaft still linked in neutral? (I don't think they are, are they?) I would think that the mileage and wear would be negligible.... worst case, the front driveshaft rotates, right?
