Axle Bearings

Got a question, I'm a little confused. Had to put new axle bearings on my 2000 4x4 with a 5.4. I am certain it has a 9.75 rear, it has the right cover with 12 bolts. Anyway, I go to Orellys and they bring out the bearing for the 9.75 and it's too big (I had my old one with me). They go get the bearing for the 8.8 and it's right. Thought their system was screwed up so I did a little looking on the net today and everyone shows the same thing. They show the 1561 bearing for the 9.75 (too big for mine), and the 6408 for the 8.8 (correct for mine). Could someone explain this to me. Did they have two different axle bearings on the 9.75 rear in 2000?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Shane

get under the truck and see if you have a tag on the rear axle.

you can also check your drivers side door jamb and look at the axle code. post that here or look it up.

That will tell the ratio, but how does it tell what size the rear end is?

Not familiar with that number at all. Where did it come from? Here is a link where you can use the code on the door that will tell the ratio, but that does not help with size ID.

That code is supposed to tell what model the rear is. If you go to Yukon's website it tells which axle/bearing you need based on that code. Can't find my exact code, but from what I have researched it looks like I have the 1.62" ID bearing, not the 1.71" ID bearing. They were supposed to have changed in 1999, with some mixing of the bearings during 1999, but 2000 was supposed to be the bigger bearing, but I guess mine is still the small bearing. If you get a chance (and O'reillys will help you), pull a 6408 bearing and compare it to a 1561. There is a huge difference in the size of the rollers. Maybe I can find a 2001-2002 rearend and do an upgrade since my axles are pretty well shot anyway.

Thanks,
Shane
