Front Diff cracked.....

I posted a previous thread about my front diff. I put the truck on some ramps and looked around just to check. Did not notice anything As i was backing up, i heard some grinding and stopped. I got out of the truck and noticed a pool of clear/dark oil.
Got underneath the truck and noticed a crack/gash on the bottom of my front differential and 2 inch hole in the front part of the diff.

I just hope that i don't have to replace everything. At lease i will find out if i have 4.56 gears.

Keep you guys posted

where is it cracked? the cover or the housing? if its the cover, it can be replaced, but if its the housing, you need a whole new housing. i have an extra front 8.8 housing with 3.55 gearing i could cut you a good deal on if you need one... it would have to be regeared, of course.

Well from what i can see it seems to be the front cover. The front cover has a 1-2 inch hole under the 8.8 stamp. Once it stops raining i will check to see if the rest of the housing is salvageable. However, there is a mounting point to a bracket in the front part of the diff that has a nice 6 inch gash(the diff not the mounting bracket). There might be a bushing in there too..Can't tell if it is the front cover or part of the housing.

At this point i don't know what to do. I was having issues with my front's engaging, but now that my front diff/cover is cracked i don't know if i should just replace the whole thing. I read somewhere that the shifting fork can cause this problem.

Someone once told me that differentials were/are indestructible...

I call B/S, come look at mine and i'll prove you otherwise.

I'll try to get some pics and post them.

You have an extra one? what year did it come from?
How many mile did you truck have when you took it off?

Shoot me an email w/ the price for the diff cover and a price for the whole thing.

Don't Know

Honestly, I don't know and i don't remember hitting anything.

I went through Cleghorn Ridge(8 days ago), but nothing to0o crazy. Mostly climbing and 2 desending trails. If i cracked it, I did it there. However that was 8 days ago.

I literally went to Costco, put some gas, dropped of some stuff at my work place and parked it home.(yesterday) Truck was not making any noise what so ever

I then put the truck on some ramps to check to see if my fronts were locking.
Nothing was leaking at that time. Backed it up and started to hear a grind. Stopped and got out of the truck and noticed the pool of diff oil. Maybe the Front cover was already weakened and finally failed.

Once we take it out I will see exactly what the damages are.

I think i might just throw a trueTrak in the front or some kind of electric locker.

Don't know....

Either way, i am waiting for a forum member to reply regarding an entire front dif.

i have a whole front 8.8 differential from a 99 F-150. Unit was pulled in working condition at approximately 100k miles. 4WD was used on this truck approximately once a week, so it works right. 3.55 ratio. the cover has a couple scratches on it, no gouges/leaks whatsoever.

these front IFS differentials are made from aluminum, and are not indestructible, as you have shown us. yours may be ****, i can't see from the pics where exactly that big crack is.

i sent you an email response via my hotmail account.

Well the crack starts from the front mounting bracket and travels down to the where it bolts up to the back half

does the crack extend into the back half, or stop at the cover? the front mounting bracket is part of the cover, the mount bushings are separate serviceable items, though.

regardless, there is a huge hole in your cover, and there's no telling what internals could have gotten messed up inside the housing.

i replied to your email message, i will check for you this week on the shipping quote, probably tuesday.

It stops at where the cover meets the bolts to the second half. i just stuck my finger in the hole and felt around.(<<< That just didn't sound right.) There are some loose items in there.

it sounds like you may able to get by w/ a new cover, and a check on the internals. are you still interested in my unit? with mine, you will still have to tear into it and regear it, so you're looking at considerable work either way...

The differential is off. And well it is not looking to good.

The Ford dealer completely dropped the ball on this. The locking pin unscrewed itself out. Once that happened everything went flying out. We didn't see any locktite on the threads of the locking pin. the gears look fine. No damage that we can see.

My question is now this, the gear that are housed in the carrier can those be replaced or will i need to replace the whole carrier with the internal gears?

My 4.56 (ring and pinion) are fine.

We also noticed that one of the axle(see 1st pic) is missing some bearings(i believe) Is this normal? Or will it need to be replaced?

minimonster, i don't think your front diff set up will work on my 01 f150.
I double checking that.
