Hard time going into 4WD

My truck has a really hard time going into 4WD or coming out of 4WD. It is a manual transfer case. The shift lever doesn't really want to budge.

Any idea what is wrong? or how I can make it shift easier?

Specs:
1997 F150 XLT supercab, 4.6 v8, auto tranny, manual 4x4. Stock everything. 211,000 miles.

unbolt and inspect the physical linkage for corrosion/missing chunks, etc. that would be a good place to start.

a couple months after i got my truck i bottomed out on a curb and bent the crossmember a little bit. i had never used the 4wd before then but when i did start using it mine was always hard to shift, i never thought anything of it just figured thats how it was made. but then after having a new tranny installed a couple years down the road and having some vibration issues i ended up putting a new crossmember under there and it didnt fix the vibration but it did make the 4wd shift smooth. i guess it had put the transfer case in a bind.
