Different applications. Black and gray are multi-use, red is high temp, etc. If you are sealing a rear end, use the black. Doesn't look as crappy when seen from the rear as the red does. I used the black on everything at the shop, until we started using the gray. The gray needs time to "set", before any fluids go in, but it SEALS!!!!

I used to use gaskets on my 9 inch in my old truck. Everytime I did, it would leak. One time, I had it out and they ran out of the gasket at my parts store, so I put RTV on it. Guess what, it never leaked. I haven't put a gasket on one since (around 1991). The only time RTV leaks, is if it isn't properly applied, or oil is put in too soon.
