Loud rear end clunk/grinding

Exclamation Loud rear end clunk/grinding

Seems like I have a similar problem like a few other people that have posted on the threads. I have a 2002 F-150 XLT 4.6L extended cab with no limited slip in the rear. The problem I'm having is gradually getting worse. It seems to happen while turning, left or right, and in reverse at low speeds. Recently, it just started to happen while the wheel is straight while going in reverse at low speeds along with while in 4x4 (found that out due to the recent snow). Only thing is, its getting to the point now where it sounds and feels like someone just hit me from behind followed by a violent shake. I'm worried that this will turn into an expensive fix and being that this is my daily driver, an immediate fix or solution would help.

I'm not incompetent when it comes to problems but I'm almost positive I don't have a limited slip diff. I can spin one or both wheels freely (when driving if needed) without getting the usual control that a limited slip offers. I'm also not a mechanic so I could be completely wrong. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Update: problem got much worse to the point that even I was afraid to drive my own truck. Decided to go to the stealership to get it checked out. After the service manager and I went for a literal 10 foot test drive, he knew what and where the problem was coming from; that being the rear axle/diff. They found metal throughout the whole rear diff., spider gears were wasted as were the bearings in the rear diff., along with the possibility of needing to replace the ring and pinion/side gear. Pretty much a complete overhaul. Estimated worse case scenario would be $2375.00 incl. labor depending on anything being salvageable. Not my idea of a cheap or easy fix. On a good note I found out I have a locking rear diff.

Price seems high but I know the service manager personally for a long time so I figure hes not gonna rip me off (too bad). I wish I could have investigated it myself but just couldn't seem to find the time to dig into it.

Looks like a new bike will have to wait till next summer. (sigh)

That really sucks to hear... I didn't think the clunk noise would lead to metal grindings in the gears...
