Talking 8.8 ford diff. vs. gm 8.5" diff

i work in a service related field that rebuilds, repairs & supplies service parts for "do it yourselfer's" who wish to rebuiild their own differentials.
I can testify that we see approx. 25-30 GM 8.5" diff's. to one 8.8 ford diff. most of the GM 8.50" that we see are out of chevy, gmc pick-ups, blazers & vans. most that we see are less than approx. 6 years old.
we don"t see many dodge diff's (9.25") either. we see alot of dana 60, 70 @ 80 models.

yea, the 8.5 must be GMs 10 bolt. They don't last long. As reliable as the 8.8s are I can't figure why ford put the 9.75 behind the 5.4s, just a loss of ground clearance to me.

I don't know why all mfgrs don't use the 9" rear. That is what everyone trys to stuff under their cars at the track. I have 2) that are 30yrs old, and still kick ***.

Actually from what I have read the 8.8 is stronger in stock form. However the 9 is easily upgraded to be super strong.

Question

"Stock" is a relative term. Stock for my 2)Torino Cobras include: Nodular carrier, 31-spline, Detroit Lockers. 30 years of hopped up engines and no problems. Certainly hard to beat in a car axle. This is still the best thing Ford sells in their Motorsport catalog.

The GM 8.5 is a piece of junk. I've got one in my Yukon and have had nothing but problems. Seals going out, yoke had to be replaced, differential bearings replaced. And now its making noise again... BTW, I don't drive off road, I don't tow a trailer, and I don't hot rod it.
