Drive shaft problems

I have a 98 f150 long bed extended cab 5.4 auto XLT. I lost the carrier bearing the other day and found out ford has made this an obsolete part. The Tech at the dealership had a hard time finding one of the right size. It also looks like it damaged the drive shaft when it went (or just 165,000 miles) and they said I need a new driveshaft at $600.00. Has any one else had this problem before? They also said that not too many of my trucks were made (Can't believe that). Any aluminum ones out there and do they work well? Thanks
