Differential Swap

Hi everyone.

My truck is a 1998 F150, 2 wheel drive, 5.4L with four wheel ABS. I want to Swap out the Differential to have 4 wheel disk brakes and not drums for better braking. If I get a complete rear end out of a 1999 to 2003 f150 with disk brakes and 4 wheel abs. Are all the shock, and spring mounts the same and would the brake lines and drive shaft need to be changed too?
Thanks. Any information that you have would great.

As long as it's a 9.75 axle, nothing would need to be changed. Brake lines are the same. However, the master cylinder may be different.

You could also get one out of a 4x4......with a lower ratio and limited-slip, if you wanted

You will just be wasting time and $$$. The difference that you'll be making with the swap is not worth it. The drums work just as well as the disk would, if you did the swap.

just buy a brake kit. Its easy as pie to swap drum brake to disc. Swapping out the whole rear end is rediculous !! Brake swap my friend. Piece of cake, cheap, and your braking will greatly improve, as will ease of working on your brakes. If you off road often (assume you do, since your going full spool) then disc brakes are the only way to go. You might need to play with the porportioning valve for the brakes, to make sure enough fluid flows, but other then that, its quick and simple.

something like that. I know they offer all kinds of kits, you could call them and see what they can offer you.

Hell yea I did it!! It took a weekend to do it. If your truck has drum brakes and you change it to disk you will need a 3/8 tube flaring tool for the brake lines and cable clamps for the parking brake cable to hook up the spring. I installed new shocks in the rear, u-joints at both ends of the drive shaft, new rotors and pads (Just cause I was there and had it all apart.) Thanks for asking!! John

I installed a 9.75 limited slip diff with disk brakes out of a 1999 F150 4x4. I did not need to change the master cylinder or the brake booster. One other thing i forgot was if your truck has 4 wheel ABS you will need to take off the sensor plug on top of the old diff to rewire the new diff with the old ABS system on the truck. Cause the plugs on a 98 and a 99 ABS system are different. If you don't the ABS light will come on.
