rear end identification

is there anybody on the boards who has the knowledge of how to identify an axle by the axle tag attached to the differential....? I am regearing the whole truck front and rear, it is a 2005 F-150 SC FX4 with 373's. I am doing a diff swap up front already loaded with 4.10 gears and out back i have Motive Gears and I am also going to replace the carrier/diff with an Auburn LSD unit but cant figure out if I have "long rear splines" or "short rear splines", can anybody lend me a helping hand.....? Here are the codes off the tags if it is of any assistance:

top code - V 953 R
bottom code - 3L73 975 4M03

thanks in advance for any help!!!!!

Ok, I'm not too sure about this long or short spline thing. All splines are the same. There were different specs on the wheel bearings, but that only applies to replacment axleshafts. Regardless of which axle shaft you have, they use the same carrier. Auburn only offers one diff for the 9.75.

Anyways, you tag decodes to 9.75 with a 3.73 ratio and limited slip. But I'm guessing you already knew that??

yea I did know that much.... lol... I was wondering because when you go to 4wheelparts.com and run a search for it, it has a listing for long and short rear spline axle but with the same part number, and I just wanted to make sure that there was no difference before I ordered and then screwed it up and had to return the parts.... know what I mean

4wheelparts has some funny stuff with their online catalog. For instance, I ordered some manual hubs for my Ranger. As I'm sure you also know, the Ranger is identical to the Mazda trucks. However, if you looked up hubs for a Mazda B4000, they were $25 cheaper than looking them up for a Ranger. The odd thing was it was the same part number in the shopping cart......just different prices depending on where you linked to it!!

Just nevermind the 4wheelparts thing......there's only one carrier.

I dont think so:

they have 2 listing for the f-150 axle:

- 9.75 with long 34 spline axle
- 9.75 with short 34 spline axle
