Has anyone rebuilt an 4406 electric shift?

Question Has anyone rebuilt an 4406 electric shift?

So after picking through a half dozen or so 97-98 4406 transfer cases at the junkyards, the best of the bunch still has quite a bit of slop in the chain. It came out of a 95,000 mile Expy....couldn't find anything that age with lower miles.

I'm thinking about at least replacing the chain before it goes in. Since I'm doing that, the bearing/seal kit is a little over a hundred and a new oil pump is about $50.
As it comes out of the boneyard, it's got a 90-day warranty...but I ain't all that crazy about having to pull this back out again if it does wind up being a dud.
If I tear into it, obviously the yard won't warranty it any more but I'm thinking my labor time is worth spending the extra bit to know it's fresh before install.

Thoughts?

Has anyone ever ordered parts from www.drivetrain.com or what would be another good parts source?

Just make suer you drain all the oil out. I makes a mess. A clean t-case makes it less likely to drop crud into it when you reassemble it. Mine was caked in sandoil. Sand and oil from a leak. Get the book so you know where every thing goes and get to it. I would recommend gloves to keep hands clean. If you get dirt on them pull them off and get a new pair. I went through 10 pairs of those blue ones. I didn't want dirt inside the t-case.

Thanks for the info!

This will get the same treatment as when we rebuild gearboxes at work. Clean it up before, clean the guts, and yes blue nitrile gloves are great for keeping your hands and the parts clean.

I'll be working from the FSM so I've got pretty good documentation on it. I was wondering if anyone that had done one before had any little tips on any "surprises" inside that the manual doesn't cover.

I'm planning on doing a full kit in it. New oil pump, bearings & bushings, pads on the fork, chain, etc. I'm hoping I don't need any large internal parts! I talked to the yard I bought the new case from that I'm planning on using this as a rebuilder and they won't have a problem with exchanging it for another if I do find any major damage inside. It's nice to have a good local yard to deal with!!!
