six wheel bearings?

so i wanted to replace my wheel bearings today, i bought an inner and outer for both sides took the rotor off and tool off what i thought was the inner and outer bearings. when i went to take the dust shield off, lo and behold there was a third bearing behind it, between the dust shield and the seal. was that "middle" bearing supposed to stay in the rotor or something?
i have mostly worked on GM cars, and i have never seen this, and my Haynes manual makes no mention of it, even in the exploded view in the "replace wheel bearings" section. btw this is only concerning the front wheels.

thanx.
