wheel bearing help

I am in need of some advice here. I had taken my truck to a local ford dealer and they had told me it needed a new wheel bearing assembly in the front and quoted me $290 for the part and $100/h for labor. I did a little research on the net and found a wheel bearing assembly for $155 and local parts stores want $200 give or take a few dollars. Is this right, because I looked up replacing them in my Chilton's manual and it just gives replacing and packing the bearing itself not the assembly, and also is it gonna be a p.i.t.a for me (with some skill) to replace. oh yeah, I have a 99 F150 w/ 4 wheel disc abs. thanks for your time and help in advance. shawn

If your truck is a 4x4 then that is about right. The entire hub has to be removed and they are not cheap. I am supsrised you found a aftermarket one that cheap most that i have ever priced out are right in the same area as Ford.

You are always going to be quoted full retail price at the dealer for parts unless you have a commercial account with them.

that price sounds right. i have a 2002 f150 4X4 and last summer i had to do both wheel bearings and the list price for the parts were $480 for one. My cusin has a discount at Napa and i was able to get them for $180 each.
