IWE location? No 4x4?

This past weekend I drove a couple hundred miles in the rain/snow, parked, came out to about 6 inches of snow, went to flip it to 4hi and no go, no lights or nothing, tried 4lo nothing. Pulled it into the shop and started the heat, checked all the fuses, relays on saturday nothing, still didn't work. Truck sat outside on saturday night, sunday afternoon went to town, flipped the switch and the 4x4 worked, and did again today. I am in 4x quite often living in MN, so it can't be a no-use issue. I don't want to be needing 4x4 and not have it work so should I replace the IWE with the new version I've been reading about on previous posts? Where is this thing at? I'm a GM guy so this Ford stuff is foreign to me. Thanks!
