Exclamation Any one with leaking Diffs?

Well, just dropped the truck off at the shop for the second time to have an oil leak looked at, and also to have the rear diff looked at. It is leaking out the rear gasket on the cover. Just wondering how many other people have this problem?????
Seems like I got one heck of a lemon of a truck from Ford!!!!!!!!

My real diff seal leaked at around 30,000. I had it fixed under warranty, and haven't looked back since.

MNFORD99,

At least yours waited awhile before leaking. Mine was leaking out the rear gasket direct from the factory. Not just a little weep, but enough that is was acutally dripping onto the floor overnight! The dealer put in a bunch of black goop gasket sealer and it hasn't had a problem since. (Unfortunately, the dealer tried to tell me that hypoid oil was that same as a friction modifier for my limited slip diff, and I had to drain and fill the thing myself. I just didn't trust that guy, a service manager that doesn't even know what hypoid means!)

MNFORD99- You and I seem to be having a lot of similar problems. Didn't you buy yours at Minar also?! My leak has been "fixed" twice, I think it's still leaking! We should meet at Minar some day and drop both of our trucks off!!!

Four leaky diffs, Three from the Twin Cities area in Minnesota. Something in our climate? I don't know. Just a thought.

Hey ZRracer-
No, I got mine from Buffalo Ford, but have the work done at Minar, as it is about 5 blocks from my house. I will tell you one thing, the service department has changed since everyone there was let go from the dealership and they have started fresh agian. I dropped the truck off there for another oil leak, and complained about cold engine knock as well, (info from a ford mechanic at a different dealership) and he told me to say about that. I did, and now they are dropping in a new 2000 5.4L for me, and I don't have to pay one penny for it. Talk about great, but if this new one starts knocking, it is going back as well. I am happy with the service that I have gotten there since last Friday when I got my oil changed. Better than before when the engine was just rebuilt.

Gopher-
You might be onto something there, when it seems like it is just a Minnesota thing, but post hasn't been up long enough to get that many people to say about any diff leaks.

ZRracer, Gopher, MNford99F150-1 & any other Minnesota members..... Would be a lot of fun to get together just to see the trucks, even if we do have problems with them. Should just set a date and meet at a dealership (lol) and see what they would say. Pressure in numbers should work to get something done.

I gotta agree MNFORD99, it hasn't been much of a discussion for enough posters to track it down to this area. Just seemed like an interesting coincidence!

Congrats on getting a new engine out of the whole deal - I wouldn't neccesarily mind one of those with the mileage I have on mine!

Even with the problems, this has still been the best vehicle owned in my family in terms of problems!

My rear diff is leaking a little. I thought it was because of my off-road bumps and rocks that did it! But I didn't see any marks or bent pumpkin cover! I did see some nice sealent hanging around the bolts?

I guess I will take it to the dealer...

NMFORD99,

You are not alone. My 97 leaked and my 2000 also. The 00 was in twice for the same leak, dealer didn't fix it right the first time. Lazy sh*t didn't wait for the sealent to cure before refilling the diff.

TSB- Technical Service Bulletin(Bullsh..)
My front diff had what I call a leak (gear oil on the outside) it had not yet dripped at 3k. The dealer,(Tuttle Click, Irvine), said it was normal, seals "weep".
BS, my '88 Toy 4x4 didn't "weep" or drop anything until 160k. The rear diff is okay.
I wipe the front diff at each oil change while I'm there. I'm always wiping film of fresh oil. It's not the climate! To me, it's the poor materials used today to be "environmentally friendly"
My thoughts, BYGBRI

Oh, now I have something else to take a look at when I get home from work tonight. Oh well, might as well take full advantage of the factory warranty while I still have it. Thanks for posting about the front diff leaking as well BYGBRI.

I'm changing the diff oil in my 9.75.
I was able to find a Fel-Pro gasket for it.
I normally don't trust other mechanics much less ford one. No offense to the good ones out there, but there are so many idiots.
I will do the oil change after my cold goes away. I will also post the product number,BUT you won't find it for the f-150. They have it listed as the f-250LD. 12 bolt pattern rearend.

Thanks for the information about the rear seal. That would help a lot if you would list the part number for us. Granted I don't think I am going to replace it seeing it is still under warranty, but it will be great for future reference. Thank you Powerlifter405.

got underneth there and checked everything.
At 10pm the concrete won't burn your skin like it will in the afternoon.
Lo and behold the gasket is just a wee too big. The bolt pattern is a "match" but the gasket is too big. From what i'm thinking since the bolt pattern 'matched' and from the info checker had from felpro, it could be a 10.25 gasket. The 1/2in change in size would just be enough to make the housing that much bigger. Hmmmmmmmm.
I'm going to do some more searching to see what i can find.
If i have to i'll by a sheet of the gasket it's self and just cut out a pattern.

Check out this rear end cover from Mag-Hytec. It has a lot more oil capicity and seals with an O-ring like aerospace. It has a dipstick and two magnets. It cools about 45 deg F. and looks great. I guess what brought this up was that thay don't leak!!!
