Rear end question.

What is the purpose of this small plastic ring on my 2001 F150 SC 4x4. It seems like some squeaks come from it.

It is a seal shield. It is used to prevent seal damage if something gets wraped around the pinion. From experience it does work.

If you are getting squeaks from the rear, it is more likely a u-joint problem.
