Question trans case or u-joint noise

I bought this 93 f150 XLT in Novemeber, The few times I have engaged the 4x4 a noise comes from the front passenger sider. At first it was a loud rubbing sound, the other day it evolved into a banging noise lots of vibration.
1 mech says its a u-joint another says its the transfer case.

Is there any way to tell before spending lots of cash?

thanks to anyone who helps.

Also noise stops as soon as hubs (manual) are unlocked.

Clicking can be a u-joint or if you have the manual hubs unlocked and put into 4x4, you can get a clicking noise. Not good for the hubs. More likely a u-joint. Don't forget, there are 8 of them on th 4x4 version.

I already had the bad u-joint replaced.Mech says the others are solid.
Clicking only occurs when the hubs are locked and 4hi is engaged. sound continues after going to 2hi until I stop and reverse a few feet.

thanks for your help.
