could somebody please explain???

in a previous post ( https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=309167 ) i asked about switching to LS from an open diff. someone said that changing to a LS in the front diff. would cause wheel hop. i was under the impression that a LS would allow one wheel to spin faster around corners and what not. could someone please explain this to me.

thanks

chris

Limited slip is exactly what the name implies. Even in the rear axle, the outer wheel has to turn faster than the inner through a curve, as it is covering more distance. The only time you get wheel hop and uneven wear would be a true posi, like back in the day when we would weld the spider gears together in our open diffs. You will be fine, LS in front. Ford even offered this, axle code is H92 3:55 ratio LS front and rear. I dont think they offerd it after 1996 though.

Another problem with having an LS or locker up front is that the vehicle will have a tendency to go straight on slippery surfaces, even with the wheeled turned right or left.

^^ exactly right! this would be a problem. Most of my fun is in the snow, and I couldnt ask for a better set up than what I have now. 3:55 LS rear, open front. It would be a lot of $$ and work to make the LS front thing happen, I would be absolutely sure before you go through the expense!! But to answer your question it can be done.

you may want to consider putting manual lockout hubs on the front if you run a l/s up front

Which to this point is not going to happen as no one makes them to replace the IEW's.
