Axle tag decoding

Here is the info I have from each tag, I know the rear axle assembly was swapped if I read this right it is the wrong gear ratio.

REAR TAG
S 854B
3 31 88 8K26

FT. TAG
S - 956A
3 55 88 6B09

My truck is factory 3.55 and I assume the rear tag shows a 3.31 not good for 4X4.

Thanks!

Mike

If those tags are right, DO NOT put your vehicle in 4x4. Per the tag, the rear is a 3.31 open diff. 8.8".

That's wacked. Who would do such a thing. If it were me, I'd jack it up and do the spin the wheel and count the axle turn thing. And pray that the front is the same as the rear.

like the previous posts said, i would'nt be puttin her in 4wd either
hopefully the people that done this accidentally put a wrong tag on your cover. i would be prying the case apart myself, counting the #of ring gear teeth/ #of pinion gear teeth= gear ratio, or do the wheel spin thing by counting the number of times the driveshaft turns vs. one complete turn of the rear wheel.
when i changed my gears out, i just removed the tags, and used a paint marker to identify the gear ratio on the rear /front axle. yeah, thats a pretty raw deal if those gears are actually different!

Well I am pretty sure the tags are correct. I drove it out in my backyard and tried it out this evening everything shifts fine but when I pulled back on the drive way in the rain it was spinning the rear tires aginst the ft ones, so 2wd it is until I can change the rear back to 3.55. STINKS!! The guy I bought this truck from was a idiot... just keep finding things to fix.

You also might want to think about changing the rear to a LS. It will make a big difference when you need 4x4. I had one vehicle that was a 4x4 without LS, never again.
