Unhappy Bouncing btw 40-45

Hey guys,

I did a search for this topic and got all kinds of posts, but no solutions. I read that it could be worn shocks, tires out of round, warped brakes, drive shaft problems, and that because both rear shocks are mounted to the frame behind the rearend that could cause it as well.

Well I replaced all four shocks, I had a warped rotor and fixed that, but still nothing. I have only had this truck for a year and when I bought it all four of the tires were cupped, so I thought that that was the problem. I replaced all four tires and still had the bounce. The tires had a recall on them and I got four new ones, but the truck still bounced. I have had the tires balanced and rotated with no luck.

The truck is a 2002 4x4 Scab with 114k miles. I really like the truck, but this bouncing is really starting to make me not want to drive it. Like I said I found all kinds of posts with people having the same problem, but they were from 4-5 years ago and no one seemed to find a fix. If anyones has had this problem and fixed it please let me know what I can do. If you need anymore info on the truck please let me know. Thanks.

Shaun

Did you check your ball joints. Worn springs.

check your tie rod ends, as well as the pitman arm and idler arm.

i have a friend whose tires would do this. i rode with him, and i thought the tires were bouncing up and down, until i stuck my head out the window to watch them, and it turns out they were shaking from side to side.

we replaced the tie rod ends, all 4 of them, and it helped out a bunch, but it would still do it on rare occasions. we then replaced the idler arm and pitman arm, and problem fixed. have not had a problem with it since..

just a thought

Jon

Thanks for the help so far. I haven't ruled out the drive shaft yet. I don't think that the issue is in the front. When I rotated the tires I could see wear on the rear tires, but there was none on the front tires. Over Christmas when I visit my parents I'm going to swap wheels and tires with my moms truck (99 4x4 scab) and see if that fixes it. If not then I'm going to look at the U-joints. I just don't see anything else that it could be? Oh well the joys of owning a used vehicle.

How long has it been since your transmission was serviced? It sounds like torque converter shutter. Mine starts doing it(same as yours, at 40 through 50) every 15 to 20 thousand miles. A fluid change always cures it. I would not rule out u-joints though.

Tranny was flushed about 1,000 miles ago. The more I drive the truck I think that I may have a bad U-joint. I'm going to try and change that this weekend and see if it helps any.

x2

my truck bed will bounce vertically. the last time i noticed this i was rotating tires, kicked my rf wheel to get it off the studs and i noticed the whole tierod assy moved inward and up. idler arm was way loose! give your front end a complete shakedown, check all joints.

Just curious if there was a resolution to this. Anything? I've had a similar problem since I got my truck almost 3 years ago.

Well holy hell...

I just thought I would update and say that I replaced my steering box this weekend and noticed tonight my shake is now gone. Gone. I drove probably 2 miles trying to get it to do it, and it does not do it any longer. Amazing.

Details of my issue can be found here. Klitch, you nailed the front-end connection. Any kind of looseness is a potential cause of bouncing. Hopefully this helps someone in the future nail down their issue.
