8.8 Axle seals on a 9.75 rear end?

Can this happen? I'm almost positve I have a 9.75 rear end (2000 5.4L F150, 4x2, 12 bolt diff cover), but I'm forced to use 8.8 axle seals because that's what fits. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Is there any other way to make sure whether or not I have a 9.75 rear end?

Uh... I'm no expert but I'm inclined to believe that if the 8.8 seals fit that you have an 8.8.

not in my case. I took a look at the axle tags, I definitely have a 9.75 rear end with 8.8 axle seals.

edit: Here's the axle tag code itself. Can anybody decode the rest of it for me?
