Front CV Problems
Front CV Problems
To make a long story short, I've had problems with the front vacuum hubs from the first time I have ever towed my Jeep with my F-150. The last time it gave me problems was heading up to Hot Springs Arkansas when they started trying to engage again
and I had to engage and disengage the 4wd selector to make them quit making the noise. Well, when I got back to Houston, the noise had stopped so I didn't take it in to the dealer because we all know, if it's not making the noise, they aren't doing anything. I was looking for the cause of the problem on Saturday and noticed that the front CV shaft on the passenger side was throwing grease out of the boot. Am I correct in thinking that this shaft should on a normal condition not spin at all, thus it never should have worn out, and should not have been throwing the grease out? I can check it when I get it back by jacking up the truck with it running and the wheel should turn, but the cv shaft should not. Correct?
Thanks,
Robbie

You do not say what year you have. On a 97-03, yes the front axle should spin as all lock/unlock is done at the diff. On 04 up, it is done at the front IWE (hub).
It sounds more like the front boot was torn and let dirt and water in causing the CV joint to go bad.

Sorry, it is an '06 F-150 4x4 Screw. I don't think that the CV going bad is what has caused the problems with the IWE because when it started making the noise again, is was both sides, not just the passenger side.

With the 06, the axle should not have been turning. Not sure why the boots were leaking, but have heard of it with some leveling kits causing too much angle and the boots getting torn.
IWE's have bee known to go bad, but have not heard of them causing problems with the CV joints or boots.
Check in the 04 up forum.

kingfish51, thanks for the help. I just wanted to check it out throughly this time after it gets fixed to make sure that it is indeed fixed this time. There is a whole lot to be said for the old style manual locking hubs.
