Smile 4x4 newbie

Hello Everyone,
I will be picking up a new 2000 F-150 XL 4.6L V8 4x4, RC, LB from the dealership next week. I have a few questions about 4x4, and I was wondering if someone could help.

-I live in Canada, and we have pretty harsh winters here (one of the reasons I'm getting 4x4). What should I put in the back of the bed to prevent slippage? How much weight? 200, 300 pounds?

-What other maintenace is involved in driving a 4x4 besides engaging the 4x4 once a month (if not in use, i.e. in the summer).

Much Thanks,
John

Sand bags (200 lbs.) cut two 2x4s' and place them in the slots in the bed. Put the bags between the 2x4s' so they won't slide. Also get a block heater if you don't have one it sure helps. I also have pan heaters on the oil and transmission pans, it keeps those fluids warm and ready to go. Have a safe winter, it's good that you are planning ahead.

"Other maintenance involved with owning a 4 by 4" = additional fluid changes in the front differential and the transfer case.
