my 4x4 sounds like a diesel engine
OK it is true everytime I take off (4x4 on or not) my drivetrain makes a diesel engine sound. It sounds louder when I take off in second gear or when I need my truck to force.
In low range, when going up a 40 degree pitch and stoping in the middle I hear a thunk! sound. I am sure that the front drive shaft is loose. I went to my dealer ship last year and told them about the strange noises. He told me that it is normal??? I said OK but my 1978 Bronco 4x4 never made any noises like that and it is still all original, so why does a 1997 sound like its gonna fall apart???
I ignored my truck and believed this so called mechanic until I started talking to other F150 4x4 owners that said WHAT NOISE???
I just hope that the thing won't give out while I'm going on 40 to 45 degree pitches.
PLEASE tell me if your truck makes these noises. ONLY ANSWER THIS QUESTION IF YOU HAVE A MANUAL AND 4X4! thanks...
I still have 2000 kms on the truck and I will go to the dealership with a nice list of what I want done on it. Lets see I have this noise, a leaky rear diff., and that little plastic button on my seat doesn't work. If they say it is normal again I will call the ford Customer Service. (I called before concerning my synthetic oil during that V6 recall and I won - They got a fax from FCS)...
thanks
Steve

Steve,
Mine does it also, sort of a mechanical sound, It comes from the tranny I think, I only hear it when I am using little to no throttle and begining to move. Kinda like when you are in too high of a gear or something :-) Oh and I was under the truck today and there is nothing loose, drive shafts etc are all tight, so its either Vibration of the exhaust at low speed/low Rpm
or similar
