3.73
Greetings Silverback!!
Just my opinion .... I would recommend that you opt for a lower gear ratio than 3.73 for your differential. If you currently are running a 3.55, moving to a 3.73 will give you a barely noticable difference.
I would look for 4.10's personally. I'd hate to see you spend all that money and then wish you'd gotten 4.10's.
Good luck!!
P.S. Look for Precision Gear or Richmond Gear.... these seem to be the most recommended.

I agree!
I had 3.55 with P255 on my last truck. When I put the LT246 on the new one, their added size was cancelled by the 3.73.

Got a 97 F150 with a 3.5" suspension lift, 305/70/16's and a 4.6 with 3.55 gears...looking for a set of gears to give back some torque....3.73 I think would be good....anybody got a set for this truck?
Wont 4.10 give me to many R's making it a real B@!#$tch on the road? I live in So. California....If memory serves correct at 75MPH (acording to speedo which is off 5-6 mpg..so really it's more likely 80) I am taching only 2200RPM. I just want to make sure that my swap out doesnt end up hurting me in the end.
What are you thoughts gang?

Not with your bigger tires. It will be just about right where you were to start with before the tires.

I'm kinda in the same boat. I went from 255 tires to 285's. I've been looking at trying to get my low end back. I installed a Superchip, exhaust, and K&N air intake replacement kit. I didn't notice much difference. I've been asking around and I have three options. 1- Live with it. (NO WAY) 2- Go back to original tiers. (NO WAY) 3- replace the current 3.55 gears.(EXPENSIVE) I was told the 3.73 would not make much differnce at all. So far my best bet is the 4.10's. Some guys ever say theres a 4.30 available for the F150. A few guys said when they went to the 4.10's there mileage went up a tad. I called around Sacramento, CA area and was quoted from $1109.00 to $1400.00. I'm looking for the most reputable shop. Hope this helps a little.
My calculations based off of what Frank & Beans said puts me at a 3.87 gear needed in the rear. I know they make 3.73 and 4.10 how about 3.90's? I have a 4x2 so I don't have to worry about the front end like some members with a 4x4.....

Silverback,
Last time I checked, Ford didn't offer the 3.90 ring and pinion gear set. Your best bet would go for the 4.10's, this way you will have (better than stock performance) and gives you the opportunity to upgrade to a larger tire size. My current tire size is ok for now, but when the time comes, I'll be upgrading to the 285's. And will still be better than stock performance. My gear ratio w/ the 285's will be 4.03:1

I am doing some research on this as well. If anyone has some recommendations on which company's gears to buy, please let'er rip. I think the gears (ring and pinion set) will be about $190. Install kit (do I need this, and what is it?) about another $40-$50, and labor $??? depending on where you go, Or you can do it yourself (not too tough, but you really need a hydraulic lift and the right tools, or a friend with a shop!) I did one of these with my old mustang, but I was not involved in the buying of the parts, because I was only 16. By the way, silverback, what rims do you have on your truck?

Might look at this for ring & pinion sets... Not sure if it's any good to you but worth a look.
