slight whine...maybe exhaust??

slight whine...maybe exhaust??
I should probably post this in the exhaust category but will try here. Have a slight, but ANNOYING whiny kind of noise that I don't THINK is gear or trans related, though maybe the engine. Happens at 1200 to around 1700 rpm and light or a little more load while accellerating. I get the same sound at idle in park or neutral but less so if standing on the brake at stop and trying to rev the engine some.
Could this be something inside the exhaust? (don't hear it from the pipe and sounds like it is coming from under the truck---I remember the whistle that the old VW bugs made due to the perforated cones at the entrance to the pipes inside the muffler). I do hear it slightly while reving the engine manually when standing near the opened hood. I though of the timing chains, but it appears very sensitive to gas pedal pressure. I'm sure (hope) it is nothing serious, but it seemed to start suddenly one day at around 3K miles, or at least that's when I noticed it and has not gotten worse.
Is this nothing or ?? Does anyone else hear this? I can just turn up the radio I suppose!
