a guy on craigs list is parting a 97. ive got a 97 and i need a rearend for it. he said the tags are gone off of it, he sent me the vin, but i dont think i can use that. how can i tell him to check it besides jacking it up and turning?

 

the usual method other than that is to turn the driveline and count while you watch the tire for one revolution.

if it was always stock, call ford customer service and tell them the VIN they can get you the stock config of that truck
