What do you Pay???

A local specialty shop wants $645 for the front axle or $1,350 for both to do a gear install job...this includes seals, fluid, everything. What do you think?? I shopped around and it's the best price, and it's at a rear end/axle specialty shop...not just a generic, do everything 4X4 center.

I'm shopping around in my area now, and though I'm not through yet I will say that's better than any price I've gotten so far.

That's not bad, All the prices that I found were $1800 to $2000 for front and rear at the big shops. Found a "little" shop that did mine for $1300. I was scared cuz it was such a small shop. But I got the guy to guarantee the gears for a 1000 mile's. If the gears were going to eat they would have done it by then. When I got the truck back after a day and a half there was not one finger print anywhere, Not one lose bold. They did a really, really good job.

Just my 2c

i agree with bigdad. i prefer the small shops that have been around for awhile. not a big fan of big chain places. id rather go with the guy thats been turning wrenches 20+ years. those old schol guys i find are the best.

That's a pretty good price. A couple of years ago a friend had his 4x4 done and it cost him $1500.00.

Smaller shops are almost always the best bet. Yes, they may be smaller and not known like the "big chain" shops, but the chains usually the ones that hire the kids straight out of school so you don't always get the quality work that they brag about. Sure, they will guarantee the work, but it is a PITA when you need to take it back to get it done right vs. the small guy who doesn't have the time to do the work again so it is done right the first time.
