does front axles turn if not engaged

i have a 1997 f-150 with the push button automatic 4 wheel drive ,(no lockout hubs) ok my question is does the front axles turn when i dont push the button to engage the 4 wheeldrive? some guy says they do ,i dont think they do? anyways when i dont have it engaged i can spin rear wheels ,if the axles were turning would i be able to do that ?? please answer asap

Since your hubs are always connected to your axleshafts, they always turn together. Pre-'97 trucks have hub locks that separate them.
