info on 4:56 gears

FYI---I just swapped out my 3:73 gears for 4:56s last night. I am running 35" M/T Claws. I got it up to 80mph and was turning right around 2500rmps.

Just incase anyone is thinking about doing this gear swap.

I did it myself and it really wasn't too hard to do. Feel free to ask me any quesitons if you are thinking of doing it yourself.

So far it feels like a really good setup. I can put on the cruise control and head down the highway at 75mph and it dosen't downshift out of O/D anymore. I haven't gotten on it too hard yet. It's hard to keep the foot out of it too see what it will really do!! I am going to wait for about 200 miles before that.

Welcome to the club.

4.56 r/p is the perfect gear ratio for these trucks running 35" tires. Everyone seems to be afraid to go much higher than 4.10's.

Spread the word!!!

X2, I was torn between 4.10's and 4.56's..... I'm glad I went with the 4.56 ratio and I have 33" tires. My next set will be 35" so it's good to hear my gear selection will still be good for 35's.

Actually the more I drive this truck I'm thinking I should have gone with 4:88 gears because after these 35's wear out i am planning on going up to 38s.
I haven't done the front end yet so I have to decide whether I will buy a new set of 4:88s for the back and redo it and then try to sell the 4:56s.

Would anyone be interested in a set of 4:56 gears for the rear end? Ford racing 9.75 inch. I would sell them for somewhere around $165. They only have 200 milese on them.

Just for curiosity, what do you get for fuel economy now verses before when you had the 3.73's?

Well I'm still on my first gas tank so i'm not sure yet. I only got about 12mpg with the 3:73 gears so I'm not really worried about it.

I will let you know as soon as I find out.

I've never checked on my gas mileage. I drive 15 minutes to work each day and never go faster than 50mph between stops. Not a true test for mileage. When I bought my truck I knew I'd be paying for gas so I've never checked my mileage... I just pay the bill. I figure one needs to expect to burn some gas if you're going to drive a truck the size of mine. I have an xcalibrator set up for 93 octane so I'm spending more per gallon as well.

Oh wow, I didn't realize you only did the rear. I'm sure you already know, but make sure you don't engage your 4WD, that would be bad.
