Good deal on fixin the rear end whine?

Got a local Mustang buddy that says he can replace and re-shim the pinion bearing in my rear end for $200.

Is that a good deal for the amount of work needed?

He said he would include the shim(s) needed and all i'd ahve to supply was fluid.

I know there have been lots of threads on this stuff and i've searched through a bunch........but ultimately will this cure the whine that i get or will it eventually come back after say 10,000 miles

Is there a 100% fix for this (please don't say to replace the entire SRA)

Think about this for a second - if the axle is noisy, something's changed/broke/worn out to cause this noise. Changing pinion depth to try to fix it is like taking asprin for a chainsaw wound.

If you're gonna go so far as to disassemble the axle to gain access to the pinion gear, you may as well inspect and replace whatever else needs replacing while you're in there. No sense in half assing it, 'cause you'll just have to take it apart again later.

Well that's why i'm asking the ?'s

It's obvious something is not right.........i'm just trying to fix that problem w/o having to tear back into it.

Since you seem to have a lot of knowledge on this matter what do you suggest i do? Open things up and go from there? New ring/pinion gears?

I appreciate the help but not the sarcasm so much but no worries i don't get offended by that stuff

Yes, you need to take it apart and find out what all's broke. Whining usually comes from a faulty ring and pinion set, or incorrect setup. Check the carrier backlash before tearing it down, it should be .008"-.012". Pinion bearing preload should be around 10-15 in/lbs.

Thanks for the "straight to the point" explanation

That's more along the lines of what i was hoping for

double check that it is the bearing on the pinion. could be an axle bearing

his buddy may be right by re-shimming it. thats how you adjust backlash.

Highoutput - Thanks for the info and sorry to hear your woes continue. I sure hope you meant 36,000 miles

This is what scares me about throwing some money at it if it's bound to happen in a shrot amount of time......i might as well sell the truck instead of having an on going headache

I know i've asked this before but has anyone let the whine go for miles and miles and have catastrophic failure while driving? I only hear of "what could happen" but never actual cases of failure due to the whine

Duffman - I don't really care to go completely aftermarket in regards to the whole assembly as i plan to keep the truck fairly stock if i keep it. However if it's going to cost me close to $1000.00 couldn't i just find another whole solid rear axle unit with known working parts? Or even completely aftermarket with better than oem parts

Exclamation

Just recently I had my 8.8 rebuilt. After 4 attempts they finally got it correct. Each time they replaced all the seals, bearings, and races. They used Ford Motorsport OEM gears the first two times, then US Gears the last two times.Everything was replaced, except for the axles and carrier.Anyway,on the last attempt they used a new carrier, all new seals, bearings, and races, along with a US Gear r&p.Come to find out the carrier was warped and the new one fixed it.I'm at 300 miles on the 500 mile break in.BTW,total price was $786.12 at a differential only shop!

It is "NOT" an acceptable noise! Either they are not setting the gears up correct,or there is a bad carrier! In my case,it was a warped carrier!

Is your truck still under warranty? If so,ask for a different tech to work on it,or ask for a new differential! Don't let them bend you over a stick the blue oval up your a$$!

I completely trust the guy doing the work so i think i'll just have him open it up and see what's needed.

Was it farily obvious the carrier was warped when inspected by another mechanic? Did the others just miss that?
